4 Signs You Need Repiping

|

If you’re a homeowner how do you know it’s time for new plumbing? Most pipes are made to last decades but sometimes you need to replace them rather than repair them. As your house ages, so do the pipes making it a good idea to keep an eye out for aging pipes. Here are four signs to look out for when it comes to repiping your home.

1. Old Age

As mentioned before, pipes age along with our homes. Besides certain PVC plumbing pipes, all pipes will have to be replaced at one time or another. Depending on the type of pipes you have, their lifespans differ. Here is a helpful list of common pipes and their lifespans:

  • Galvanized steel: 20 to 50 years
  • Brass: 40 to 45 years
  • Copper: 50-plus years
  • Cast iron: 75 to 100 years

Next time you have your Severson plumber come out, ask them to check what type of pipes you have and and start calculating the age of them.

2. Cracks & Leaks

If your pipes are cracking and or leaking it’ll be pretty easy to catch. If you ever see water spewing out of the pipe as it passes through your plumbing system then there’s a good chance you have a crack or a leak. Even if a pipe is underneath the floor or in between walls it won’t take long to notice you have a pipe that needs immediate attention. If a pipe is cracked or leaking it’s only a matter of time until the water causes irreversible damage to your home. A pro tip is to never ignore water spots in any parts of your home and give your pipes a quick look from time to time to make sure they aren’t leaking.

3. Discolored Water

Discolored water that is rusty, brown, or yellow could be a sign that your pipes are corroding or that there is an accumulation of mineral deposits. There is a chance that the discoloration could be from your local water supply temporarily. However, do not drink or bathe in this water and if it doesn’t clear up within a day or so call Severson plumbing right away.

4. Low water pressure

Like discolored water, low water pressure could be because of your local water supply. If it always seems like you have weak water pressure it could be a sign that it’s time to repipe the home. Your old pipes may be too worn out to deliver the pressure you desire.
